Ep 014 Deadpool 2 and Many Dark Hours

TJPodcast Square Deadpool 2.png

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry's hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste.

Diving into this week's deep dive we find out that Jim's just not into superhero movies. Ted does his best to angle for a few standouts like Black Panther and Deadpool. But this week we take a look at the Deadpool 2 trailer featuring Cable.

Part of the fun of the Deadpool franchise is the self-referential nature of the humor.

TJPodcast Square 1st Annual SOLO Cup 02 22 18.png

This is also the second week in our bracket for the TJP Solo Cup for the best Trailer. Call Me By Your Name won week one and this week we have: Darkest Hour, The Post and Dunkirk clashing in our historical turning points round of this contest.

Gary Oldman's performance pitted against Spielberg's directing and Nolan's storytelling. Who will win? Listen to find out.

Darkest Hour Official International Trailer In cinemas January 12, 2018 Follow us on Facebook at http://unvrs.al/DHFB DARKEST HOUR, a Focus Features presentation of a Working Title Films Production.

Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in The Post, a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post's Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S.

From filmmaker Christopher Nolan ("Interstellar," "Inception," "The Dark Knight" Trilogy) comes the epic action thriller DUNKIRK, in theaters July 21, 2017. https://www.facebook.com/Dunkirkmovie/ https://twitter.com/dunkirkmovie http://instagram.com/dunkirkmovie/

ThePostPoster.jpg

Lastly, a word on The Post's poster. As the odds stack against them, here are two people taking measured steps and Meryl is leading the way. All of this is communicated with a still and the copy is all carefully placed and the image is so flexible. I've seen it as a banner or a square and all the posters even the posters with them in a medium shot show Tom and Meryl from the back. To me this means their backs are against the wall and you are being given a view of the events from their perspective, So much pressure.

Ep 013 Star Wars Solo & Best 2018 Oscar Trailers

TJPodcast Square Solo.jpg

Watch the new teaser trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story and see it in theaters May 25.

Wow! This week Jim & Ted cover a lot of ground. Before getting into the #TJPdeepDIVE for this week, Solo, A Star Wars Story, they discuss the trailers that premiered during the Super Bowl.

Including #3wordREVIEWs for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Skyscraper, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Cloverfield: Paradox, Avengers: Infinity War and Jack Ryan. Jim leads a bit of a discussion on the Dundee spoof.

Ted and Jim are torn about the idea of cannon versus fresh takes on the Star Wars Universe. The nuanced nature of a "Star Wars colon" movie versus "a Star Wars Story." They touch on a lot of theories and some big picture ideas on expanding a cinematic universe.

Ron Howard teaches directing in his first ever online filmmaking course for MasterClass.

We go long on this movie but there's a lot of Star Wars information to go over and Ted's excited to share a picture of his new Han and Chewie figurine.

We are proud to host the first annual TJP Solo Cup where we pit the trailers for the Best Picture Nominees against each other to win this cool keg cup. You might ask: How are they scoring these trailers? Here is Jim's rubric for this round. Scoring five areas on a scale from 1 to 5. Music, Editing, Story, Acting, & Directing. But remember these are all in reference to the trailers. Here is the bracket for the next few weeks.

Programme website: http://bbc.in/2FkwhuK Tom Cruise talks about how he broke his ankle when a stunt went wrong on his latest film. He also shows some exclusive footage of the incident.

Below are the trailers for the three Best Picture nominees we are reviewing this week.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comedic drama from Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award® winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, commissioning three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. It's the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian boy, spends his days in his family's 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel).

Ep 012 Comedic Darkness

TJPodcast Square Game Night.jpg

History repeats itself in this inventive, side-splitting comedy. Murray, a Pittsburgh weatherman on assignment in Punxsutawney, PA., gets stuck in a comic time-warp and must experience the same groundhog day over and over again...until he learns to appreciate the little things in life! Along the way he falls in love with his beautiful and brainy producer.

Live Die Repeat movieposter.jpg

This week we start with Groundhog Day. A movie has to be pretty powerful to spawn a genre breaking logline and this Bill Murray classic did that with this movie (I'll save the title for the pod as Ted and Jim struggle to recall the name of this Tom Cruise sci-fi action flick.)

Game Night Trailer 1 (2018) Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman Comedy Movie HD [Official Trailer]

Ted and Jim move on to planning for a double date to possibly see Game Night (Anne, Ted's wife, listened to the pod and has already passed on going to this one).

Then they move on to Unsane and agree that this was too scary (realistic scary) to see any more of this latest Soderbergh experimental. Since the recording of this pod it has been reported that the whole film was shot on an iPhone camera and in secret. Not sure how shooting a film "in secret" works or what it means Jim and Ted will keep reading up on this.

DEAR DICTATOR Official Trailer (2018) Katie Holmes, Michael Caine, Odeya Rush Comedy Movie HD © 2018 - Cinedigm Comedy, Kids, Family and Animated Film, Blockbuster, Action Cinema, Blockbuster, Scifi Movie or Fantasy film, Drama... Finally, Jim and Ted split on a trailer. Jim is not a fan but Ted finds nostalgia in Dear Dictator. Michael Caine as a Fidel-esque dictator is too much for Jim only a month after his Cuba trip. Check out Ted's seamless pun that he likes the execution of a film about a dictator.

Ep 011 Joaquin Phoenix, A Trailer-Spective

TJPodcast You Were Never Really Here.jpg

Can you learn all you need to know about an actor from trailers? Jim and Ted try and find out.

Joaquin Phoenix has had a long career and quiet a variety of films but something about his look gives his audience the idea that it's him acting there, and surprisingly - that is a comforting feeling.

Up first this week is this indie flick with Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara and Jack Black in the streaming film, Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot.

Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot - Teaser Trailer - Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara and Jack Black. A film by Gus Van Sant. Coming to select theaters May 11.

On March 9, 2018 he's in theaters in You Were Never Really Here.

A missing teenage girl. A brutal and tormented enforcer on a rescue mission. Corrupt power and vengeance unleash a storm of violence that may lead to his awakening. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and from acclaimed director Lynne Ramsay, the gripping thriller YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE is in cinemas March 9th.

These are great directors why do they like working with JP? Here's a great, yet underrated Paul Thomas Anderson film that reads more like a Coen Brothers script than the typical focused percision of a PTA film.  OK, Ted put this one in to hear Jim's Terrible British accent impersonation.

INHERENT VICE, in theaters December 2014. http://inherentvicemovie.com http://www.facebook.com/InherentViceMovie "Inherent Vice," is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

...and to round it out Walk the Line.

Singer. Rebel. Outlaw. Hero. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as dark as the night, the legendary "Man in Black" revolutionized music - and forged his legacy as a genuine American icon.

The Super Bowl cycles through the major networks (NBC, CBS & FOX) so the AFC and NFC championship games go to the other networks. The sweet renewal contract is here at TV by the Numbers. NBC got the best part of this deal.

"Cold Open," "Tease," etc. we don't know why we call these things what we call them we just do. This look inside... baseball? in the TV promo space. Sometimes I think media marketers make stuff for their own amusement but this time the meta message rings true to the everyman.

John Malkovich delivers powerful cold open for the 2018 AFC Title Game on CBS.
